On Monday, the City Council of New Braunfels decided to ban disposable containers on the Comal and Guadalupe Rivers. For those not familiar with the river, these are premier places to go tubing, or float down the river in old tire tubes. Of course, part of the fun of doing this is drinking beer. Lots of it.
I get that the river (and beer) is a big source of income for New Braunfels and that banning disposable containers will hurt its economy. But come on people, the river is not a trash can.
It may be, as some folks argue, that 90 percent of the folks on the river want to keep it clean. It may also be that the city isn't doing a good enough job of emptying the trash boats on the river so that there is no place to put the cans. Either way, something needed to be done. I'm sorry if a few bad apples spoiled the bunch, but ruining our natural resources for beer is not the answer.
Reminds me of the crying Indian anti-pollution PSA from when I was a kid. It was amazing that it took a TV commercial to tell us not to pollute.
